Lesbian Mom Discount Prompts Threats

(The Advocate) -- A Brooklyn shop owner who has been offering a 10% discount to lesbian moms at her maternity store says she has been receiving threatening calls since the sale was promoted on the website

5 charged in assault on gay Rock Hill man

(The Charlotte Observer) -- York County authorities have charged five men with assaulting a gay 19-year-old man earlier this month in Rock Hill.

The sheriff's office said Friday the five have been charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. It carries a prison term of up to 20 years, authorities say.

The five men could face additional charges, as the FBI has been investigating the assault as a possible hate crime. Sheriff Bruce Bryant said Friday that the FBI is turning over its findings to the U.S. Justice Department.

Joshua Esskew was badly beaten April 9 outside the Spot Convenience Store, on South Cherry Road. His case drew extra attention when surveillance video from the store was released, showing the men in what appeared to be a gang assault on Esskew.

Gays Caused The Mortgage Crisis

(JoeMyGod) -- "Just as a child is far less likely to suffer abuse in the home of his/her married, heterosexual parents, so the opposite is true. Where the structure is sin-based, other sins are more likely to scurry in through the cracks. Substance abuse and self-destruction accompany sexual deviance. And some of this means poor decisions about finances.

"The mortgage crisis was the sin of temptation being offered by those who relaxed legitimate standards, offered to those without the personal standards to resist. This easy-pay physical structure was too good to be true, and appealed to an increasingly covetous segment of our culture. Sexual and material covetousness are usually sin siblings. It would be interesting to study the families who have defaulted on mortgages for the correlations between structural and/or functional weaknesses like infidelity, divorce, gambling or porn addictions, job instability, credit card default, domestic abuse, sexual deviance, and criminality. There is also a high likelihood that poor or no church attendance would show up as a factor as well." - Linda Harvey, head of the SPLC-certified hate group, Mission America.

Thugs Targeting Men Comging From Gay Bars, Police Say

(New York Post) -- Teams of thugs are preying on men pouring out of popular gay bars in the West Village, police sources told The Post.

Between April 11 and 27 at least five men were mugged in five separate incidents in the area around Seventh Avenue South and Christopher Street typically in the early hours of the morning.
Many of the victims, who were all alone when attacked, hail from New Jersey.

MINNESOTA: Marriage Ban Advances

(JoeMyGod) -- The Minnesota Senate Judiciary Committee today advanced a bill to place a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage on the November ballot. But not before Democrat Barb Goodwin (left) tried a slick move to sink the bill.
Goodwin suggested tweaking the text of the proposed amendment so the Minnesota Constitution would not only limit marriage to couplings of one man and one woman, but also to one marriage per person per lifetime—a ban on divorce, though not separation. The proposed ballot question: "Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota?" Goodwin first proposed adding the words "for life" after the word "union," then to replace "a marriage" with "one marriage."
The amendments failed. Goodwin reacted (to roars of approval from the gallery): “I will never in this Legislature, will never vote — even if it means I’m voted out — to put language of discrimination in the constitution. I could not live with myself, and those of you who claim to be good Christians, you need to think about what you are doing here."

RHODE ISLAND: Catholic Diocese Calls On Assembly To Kill Civil Unions

(JoeMyGod) -- Following the collapse of Rhode Island's same-sex marriage bill, a civil unions bill is now being floated as a "compromise." And of course, the Catholic Church is early out of the gate with their denouncement.
We hope that those members of the Rhode Island General Assembly who have consistently supported traditional marriage will stay steadfast in their opposition to the legal recognition of same-sex relationships as either marriage or civil unions. Government sanctioned civil unions cannot be supported by those who truly understand the unique nature and status afforded a man and a woman in marriage. We call upon the members of the Rhode Island House and Senate to cast aside such compromises and rather work to strengthen marriage in our state by passing a Defense of Marriage Bill that clearly defines marriage as between one man and one woman. Only then will the attempts by radical activists to redefine marriage and undermine family life in Rhode Island finally be stopped. Civil Unions are not the answer.

Atlanta Braves Suspend Pitching Coach Over Anti-Gay Slurs Directed At Fans

(JoeMyGod) -- The Atlanta Braves have suspended their pitching coach after he heckled fans at a San Francisco game by shouting, “Are you a homo couple or a threesome?" and then simulating anal sex with a baseball bat.
The Braves have placed pitching coach Roger McDowell on administrative leave while they continue to investigate allegations that he directed anti-gay slurs toward fans at San Francisco’s AT&T Park. The Braves announced that minor league pitching coordinator Dave Wallace would fill in during McDowell’s absence. Braves general manager Frank Wren is scheduled to meet with the media at 4:10 p.m. The last Brave to miss game action for inflammatory remarks was former closer John Rocker after his 1999 tirade in Sports Illustrated. Rocker was originally fined $20,000 by Major League Baseball and suspended for a month, but his sanctions were reduced to a $500 fine and a two-week suspension by an arbitrator. McDowell issued an apology on Wednesday, saying “I am deeply sorry that I responded to the heckling fans in San Francisco on Saturday. I apologize to everyone for my actions.”
Celebrity attorney Gloria Allred yesterday held a press conference with one of the witnesses, who was attending the game with his young daughters. When the witness complained to McDowell about his language, the coach allegedly waved the bat at him asking, "How much are your teeth worth?"

UPDATE: GLAAD says the Braves need to do more.
“It remains to be seen whether the Atlanta Braves will take real disciplinary action and send a clear message that there is no place for anti-gay remarks or violent threats in baseball,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios. “The Braves and Major League Baseball should follow the NBA and WWE by speaking out in support of gay and lesbian baseball fans and players around the country, and by taking steps to make the sport a safe place for everyone.”

Oak Ridgers rally against 'Don't Say Gay' bill

( -- OAK RIDGE, Tenn. —
A legislator's proposal to prohibit Tennessee educators from teaching children about homosexuality is discriminatory and could lead to bullying.

It would cause authorities to question what they might be allowed to discuss with gay students or the children of homosexual parents. And it would send a message to those kids that they don't matter or count.

How the Law Accepted Gays

Op-Ed Contributor

(New York Times) -- THE prestigious law firm King & Spalding has not fully explained its decision this week to stop assisting Congress in defending the law that forbids federal recognition of same-sex marriage. But its reversal suggests the extent to which gay men and lesbians have persuaded much of the legal profession to accept the basic proposition that sexual orientation is irrelevant to a person’s worth and that the law should reflect this judgment. The decision cannot be dismissed simply as a matter of political correctness or bullying by gays.

Gay-rights supporters have transformed the law and the legal profession, opening the doors of law firms, law schools and courts to people who were once casually and cruelly shut out because of their sexual orientation.

But it was a process that took a half-century to unfold. In 1961, a Harvard-trained astronomer, Frank Kameny, stood alone against the federal government. Fired from his federal job simply for being gay, he wanted to petition the Supreme Court. But at a time when all 50 states still criminalized sodomy, even the American Civil Liberties Union declared it had no interest in challenging laws “aimed at the suppression or elimination of homosexuals.” Mr. Kameny wrote his own appellate brief; without comment, the court turned him away...

Sullivan Vs. Sisters, Round Two

(JoeMyGod) -- "Rail against the supposed grief we cause believers and wrap yourself in self-righteous anger if it makes you feel good- it’s your shtick and in these tough times I know you need a paycheck. But for the love of every young LGBTQI kid out there trying to find a way through this cruel world, please stop carping on about how events like Hunky Jesus 'empower every religious right prejudice about gays.' Bigotry like that is irrational and self- generating. They hate us because we’re GAY, Andrew, period.

"It’s actually the GAYS and all those stung by that hatred the Sisters try to help by creating space for a good belly laugh at all the holier-than-thou attitudes that keep us down. If we’re all going to Hell, there’s no reason we can’t have fun and look fabulous on the way! I’m sorry that a bunch of drag nun volunteers with a cheap sound system don’t rise to your definition of high art, but blasphemy is a democratic art form that delivers its most profound punch at street level where ordinary people struggle every day." - Sister Merry Peter, responding to Andrew Sullivan's criticism of the Hunky Jesus contest.

Apparently the Hunky Jesus Contest is actually just a new spin on a very old tradition.

Feast of Fools, popular festival during the Middle Ages, held on or about January 1, particularly in France, in which a mock bishop or pope was elected, ecclesiastical ritual was parodied, and low and high officials changed places. Such festivals were probably a Christian adaptation of the pagan festivities of the Saturnalia. By the 13th century these feasts had become a burlesque of Christian morality and worship. In spite of repeated prohibitions and penalties imposed by the Council of Basel in 1431, the feasts did not die out entirely until the 16th century.

Peter Sprigg: If Teens Don't Call Themselves Gay, They Won't Try To Kill Themselves

(JoeMyGod) -- "In any discussion of 'sexual orientation,' it is important to remember that this is only an umbrella term for three quite different things—a person’s sexual attractions, the sexual behavior, and their self-identification. In the survey upon which this study was based, there was only a single question on 'sexual orientation,' which asked 'which of the following best describes you.' The choices were 'heterosexual (straight), gay or lesbian, bisexual' or 'not sure.'

"This is essentially a measure of self-identification. Therefore, the logical take-away from the study would be this: the most effective way of reducing teen suicide attempts is not to create a 'positive social environment' for the affirmation of homosexuality. Instead, it would be to discourage teens from self-identifying as gay, lesbian, or bisexual." - Family Research Council bigot Peter Sprigg, in an FRC article denouncing last week's Pediatrics study on teen suicide.

According to Sprigg, gay kids wouldn't kill themselves so much if adults would just do a better job of browbeating them out of accepting their sexuality. Seriously.

This fool would be funny if not for the fact parents, specially parents with gay kids, listen to him. Dan Savage said that the way these people create hostility toward gays--which leads to bullying, suicide, mental health issues, etc.--and then talk about how dangerous it is to be gay is like someone driving their car up on the sidewalk, mowing down pedestrians, and then claiming it's not safe to walk the streets.

NOM Signs Up For Diaz Rally

(JoeMyGod) -- NOM has officially aligned themselves with NY Sen. Ruben Diaz' massive anti-gay hate rally, which takes place in the Bronx on Sunday, May 15th, the day of the AIDS Walk in Central Park.
On May 15, Rev Díaz called for a rally in the Bronx and I will be there! Talk about fighting for marriage in the deep blue country! But marriage is an extraordinary issue which gathers together people of all races, creeds and colors in defense of an idea: Marriage is the way we bring together the two great halves of humanity, male and female, in part so that children can know the love of their mom and dad. We're gearing up with Rev. Díaz and thousands of New Yorkers to fight for marriage. Pray for Rev. Díaz and for all on the front lines of this fight, will you? And following Rev. Díaz's lead, pray for those who wish to redefine marriage—for their safety, for a new spirit of civility and decency—and for the conversion of their hearts to support for marriage. - Brian Brown.

As in 2009, I will among the likely few counter-protesters at the Diaz rally. If you plan on attending, you might consider including respectful messages in Spanish on your signage. The odds are high that your image will end up in the other side's materials.

Tony Perkins: Gay Activists Are Terrorists

(JoeMyGod) -- "This has moved from cultural terrorism to corporate terrorism. That's what this is. Now, back in the 80's and early 90's I worked with the state department in anti-terrorism and we trained about fifty different countries in defending against terrorism, and it's, at it's base, what terrorism is, it's a strike against the general populace simply to spread fear and intimidation so that they can disrupt and destabilize the system of government. That's what the homosexuals are doing here to the legal system." - Hate group leader Tony Perkins, on King & Spalding's DOMA withdrawal.

Just three days ago we were cowards, now we're terrorists. Make up your diseased mind, Miss Perkins.

So now we're terrorists because we stand up for ourselves?

NAACP Wants Sally Kern to Resign

(The Advocate) -- The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People wants Oklahoma lawmaker Sally Kern to resign following her comments that African-Americans face disproportionate rates of imprisonment because they neglect their studies.

...On Thursday, Kern released this statement:

“I want to humbly apologize for my statements last night about African-Americans and women. I believe that our government should not provide preference based on race or gender. I misspoke while trying to convey this point last night during debate. Women are some of the hardest workers in the world. My husband is a pastor of a diverse inner-city church and the way that my words came out last night is certainly not my true spirit.”

South African Lesbian Raped and Murdered

(The Advocate) -- Noxolo Nogwaza was found dead in the Kwa-Thema township on Sunday, believed to be the latest lesbian victim of murder and the “corrective rape” practice in South Africa.

...“Ms. Nogwaza was a member of the Ekurhuleni Pride Organising Committee (EPOC), the key LGBTI organisation in Kwa-Thema. The committee, along with the Coalition of African Lesbians (CAL) said that Ms Nogwaza’s face was so badly beaten that she was unrecognisable. Her body had been stabbed all over with glass shards and an empty bottle and used condom were also reportedly found in her genitals,” reported Queerlife.

In 2008, Eudy Simelane, a South African footballer and lesbian activist, was raped and murdered in Kwa-Thema. Last year, a gay man in the township was attacked by a group that attempted to rape him.

It really annoys me that these people bring up their religious objections. Since when is it a person's right to only interact with those who agree with their religious beliefs? BTW, why is it that only conservative Christians get to have religious objections? I find their beliefs profoundly offensive, and I know I'm not alone. Maybe it's the Christianists who should shut up and stay home since the rest of us are disgusted by them.

Business Leaders, in Letter, Will Urge Albany to Legalize Gay Marriage

(New York Times) -- Two dozen high-profile New York business leaders plan to release an open letter on Friday urging state lawmakers to legalize same-sex marriage, arguing that the measure would help companies attract and retain employees.

...“In an age where talent determines the economic winners, great states and cities must demonstrate a commitment to creating an open, healthy and equitable environment in which to live and work,” the letter reads. “As other states, cities and countries across the world extend marriage rights regardless of sexual orientation, it will become increasingly difficult to recruit the best talent if New York cannot offer the same benefits and protection.”

Uncensored Dorian Gray text published for first time

(The Telegraph) -- An uncensored version of Oscar Wilde's only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, has finally been published more than 120 years after it was first released.

The book, which tells the story of a young man whose soul is bound up in a painting, was attacked as "vulgar" and "unclean" by contemporary critics despite the fact many of its more daring passages had already been edited out.
JM Stoddart, Wilde's editor, made a number of alterations to downplay the overt homoeroticism in the novel before it appeared in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in June 1890.

...One section reading "It is quite true I have worshipped you with far more romance of feeling than a man should ever give to a friend" was changed to: "From the moment I met you, your personality had the most extraordinary influence on me".

Smithsonian Scandal: Blame Homophobia

(The Advocate) -- On Tuesday and Wednesday, museum experts attended a symposium and debated the Smithsonian Institution’s removal of a video from an exhibit last fall. The result? Several curators and art critics objected to the move, which many considered the result of blatant homophobia.

...According to a story published on, many art critics and curators who debated the issue felt that “a few conservatives had seized on a religious symbol to generate objections that could disrupt the show because of its gay themes.”

..."What happened wasn't about this exhibition. It was complete homophobia, and we have to stop putting up with that."

Blake Gopnik, Newsweek’s art critic, went so far as to call the uproar a "gay bashing."

Maggie Gallagher On The HRC

(JoeMyGod) -- "To anyone who has been at the forefront of the marriage fight, there is little new in the extraordinary effort to punish a whole law firm because HRC doesn't like its client. Gay marriage advocates have again and again used class networks of power to attack individuals, livelihoods and whole business enterprises to make support for marriage so expensive that they can effectively silence opposition to their views. But this time it happened in full public view.

"In a truly Orwellian statement, HRC President Joe Solmonese praised King and Spalding's decision to abandon a client under fire as an example of putting 'principle above politics.' Oh Joe, oh Joe. It's important for all of us to remember that life for ordinary gay people can still be difficult, even as a powerhouse gay movement flexes its cultural, financial and behind-the-scenes political power to repress the rights of others to organize, speak, donate and now hire a lawyer to defend marriage. One thing is clear: This is not a movement that needs extraordinary intervention by the courts to protect its rights." - NOM chairman Maggie Gallagher, writing for Yahoo News.

Oklahoma Gets Official State Gospel Song

(JoeMyGod) -- On Tuesday, Oklahoma's House voted unanimously to make Swing Low, Sweet Chariot the official state gospel song. No other state has an official religious song.
When state Representative Jabar Shumate of Tulsa (left), the Oklahoma bill's House sponsor, was asked by a colleague to give a rendering of the song on the House floor on Monday, he declined, saying his pastor told him to always sing solo -- "so low nobody can hear." Even without a performance, no one voted against the song. "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" was written in 1862, when Oklahoma was still Indian Territory, by a Choctaw Freedman named Wallis Wallis. It's said the Red River made Wallis think of the Jordan River, and the song was loosely based on a Bible passage that describes the Prophet Elijah being taken to heaven in a chariot. "It should be a source of pride to all Oklahomans that this meaningful song was written in our state," Shumate said.
Gov. Mary Fallin signed the bill into law last night.

Antigay Okla. Lawmaker Makes Racist Remarks

(The Advocate) -- Sally Kern, the Oklahoma representative who compared LGBT people to terrorists and cancer, has turned her attacks toward African Americans as her state debates whether to end affirmative action.

...According to Tulsa World, Kern said minorities “earn less than white people because they don’t work as hard and have less initiative.”

She said, “We have a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison just because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school? I’ve taught school, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them.”

A self-styled martyr, Kern authored a new book, The Stoning of Sally Kern, and suggested that LGBT activists were to blame for disappointing sales.

Tony Perkins Vs. Coca-Cola

Ever since King & Spalding dropped their DOMA cases, word has been that their top hometown client Coca-Cola had some role in convincing them to pull out. Yesterday FRC president Tony Perkins hinted that Coke may be next on their shitlist. Via press release:
While this form of corporate terrorism may have paid off temporarily, even the press is chiding HRC for its own intolerance toward the legal process. But that doesn't faze homosexual activists. They were all too eager to take credit for their campaign of intimidation. "We did all of this, and we're proud to have done it," Sainz bragged. According to the email traffic, King & Spalding "was starting to hear from companies that... they might have to rethink their relationship with [the firm]."

Rumors are flying that one of those companies was Coca Cola. People closest to the story are suggesting that the soda king did most of the arm-twisting. "Sources... confirm that one of King & Spalding's top clients, Coca Cola, also based in Atlanta, directly intervened to press the firm to extricate itself from the case." A spokesman for the company refused to comment. But if the allegations are true, I guarantee that FRC won't hesitate to!

OHIO: Insurance Group Offers Reward For Name Of Anti-Gay Horse Killer

(JoeMyGod) -- Over the weekend, eight horses were burned alive in their rural Ohio barn in an arson attack on a property owned by a gay man. The words "fags are freaks" were found spray-painted on the barn. Today a $5000 reward has been offered for the name of the perpetrator.
Brent Whitehouse hopes a reward of up to $5,000 offered by the Blue Ribbon Arson Committee will help find the person responsible for setting a fire that killed his horses and destroyed his barn Sunday night. The State Fire Marshal's Office has ruled the fire was arson. Derogatory statements were painted on the barn walls and doors just before the fire, said Shane Cartmill, spokesman for the fire marshal's office. Whitehouse said because of those statements, the fire marshal's office is looking at the possibility of a hate crime. The reward, sponsored by the Ohio FAIR Plan Underwriting Association, works with law enforcement, firefighters and insurance industry personnel in an effort to combat arson. The fire marshal's office is asking anyone with information regarding the fire to contact them.

Tony Perkins: Gay Activists Are Cowards

(JoeMyGod) -- "The people who avoid a debate are the ones afraid of losing. That's why the groups like GetEQUAL and others are forming what is basically a mobile protest unit. Yesterday, its activists rallied outside the offices of King & Spalding--only to learn that its attorneys had bailed on the case. So what did they do? Hopped in the car, drove across town to Paul Clement's new firm, and started demonstrating there. 'I think Bancroft PPLC just bought itself a world of pain,' wrote one blogger. 'Go get them!!!' As far as they're concerned, the Constitution doesn't decide who gets lawyers--homosexuals do. FRC's Peter Sprigg was on target in a message he tweeted earlier today: Being falsely accused of bigotry may not be as bad as proving beyond all doubt that you're a coward!" - Family Research Council president Tony Perkins, via press release.

Andrew Sullivan On "Hunky Jesus"

(JoeMyGod) -- "I am a First Amendment absolutist, as readers know. And I'm also a solid defender of the right to blasphemy. But there are smart ways of doing this, ways that illuminate broader issues - think of 'The Book Of Mormon' or any South Park episode. And then there are smug, cheap and unfunny shots at the faith of other people. Really, this makes me feel like Bill Donohue. You want to grow some balls? Hold a Hunky Mohammed Contest on Ramadan. And, by the way, thanks for doing your bit to empower every religious right prejudice about gays." - Andrew Sullivan, on the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

It's interesting that Sullivan thinks the South Park episodes regarding the Book of Mormon is okay. He's not Mormon.

He thinks it would take courage to put on a Hunky Mohammed Contest. Sullivan isn't Muslim.

But he takes offense to the
Hunky Jesus Contest. He is Christian.

Maybe the people in San Francisco held the Hunky Jesus Contest because they, too, are Christian, or at least were raised Christian, and they feel oppressed by other Christians.

There are some Muslims in this country, but Muslims aren't the ones holding up gay rights in the U.S. Christians are doing that. There are some homophobic Muslims to be sure, but at the moment, Muslims are the subject of a great deal of prejudice in this country, and Sullivan would have gays join in?

Maybe the Hunky Jesus Contest isn't helpful. But I understand the frustration that
led to it. I don't understand Sullivan's call for respect of his brand of Christianity while claiming the religions of others is fair game.
This seemed more like a mindless rant than a thoughtful and helpful criticism.

BRITAIN: Court Rejects Catholic Bid For Exemption From Gay Adoption Laws

(JoeMyGod) -- A British appeals tribunal has rejected the demand of the Catholic Church that they be exempted from laws banning discrimination against gay adoptive parents. As we've seen happen in several U.S. cities, church adoption officials say they'd rather close their doors and let children go without families than abide by the law.
Leeds-based Catholic Care have said they will have no choice but to end their work finding homes for children if they are forced to comply with the new equality regulations which prohibit discrimination against same-sex couples wanting to adopt. The case went to the High Court last year before being referred to the Charity Commission, who would not back Catholic Care’s position. And the Charity Commission’s stance was upheld today by a first-tier tribunal which dismissed the appeal.

West Point Rejects Ex-Cadet

(The Advocate) -- The U.S. Military Academy at West Point rejected an application for readmission to a former cadet who resigned last year due to the "don't ask, don't tell" law, which barred out gays and lesbians from serving in the military.

..."While the don't ask, don't tell policy was recently changed and will be repealed, the effective date has not yet been determined," Lt. Col. Bryan Fischer: "Ex-Gay" Fugitive Lisa Miller Is The Rosa Parks Of Kidnappers

(JoeMyGod) -- "Tennessee pastor Timothy Miller is now in jail. His crime? Allegedly helping a mother protect her daughter from the pernicious influence of sexual deviancy ('deviancy: actions or behaviours that violate cultural norms'). [snip] Rosa Parks gained civil rights immortality because she refused an order to obey an unjust law. If there was ever a contemporary case in which civil disobedience is justified, the Lisa Miller case is it. May God have mercy on Lisa Miller, her daughter Isabella, and Pastor Timothy Miller. And may God, the Judge of the living and the dead, bring the guilty before his bar of pure and uncompromising justice." - American Family Association radio host Bryan Fischer, writing on his AFA blog.

RELATED: Fischer posts this disclaimer at the top of the above-linked column: "It should be noted that the American Family Association has taken no formal position on either Lisa Miller’s actions or the actions of Pastor Timothy Miller."

Liberty Counsel Denies Involvement In Lisa Miller "Ex-Gay" Parental Kidnapping

(JoeMyGod) -- Even though their most famous client magically turned up at a Nicaragua house owned by the father of Mat Staver's secretary, the Liberty Counsel chairman is denying being involved in the disappearance of "ex-lesbian" Lisa Miller, who fled the country in 2009 rather than comply with a court order to share child custody with her former partner.
"It's absurd to try to suggest Liberty Counsel had anything to do with the whereabouts or the disappearance of Lisa Miller," Mathew Staver, Dean of Liberty University's School of Law and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. Staver served as Miller's attorney through 2009. [snip] "She simply stopped communicating by phone, by e-mail, by letter," said Staver. "We have no idea where she went." Staver says Miller's actions forced Liberty Counsel to drop her case. [snip] But some believe Liberty had another motive and took part in hiding Miller - a claim Staver says is 100-percent false. "None of us would be stupid enough to place our careers and our futures and our law licenses on the table to try to help someone violate the law," said Staver.
Is anybody buying this? I'm betting the FBI isn't.

Matt Barber Dresses Up Revenge Fantasies As Concern

(Truth Wins Out) -- Fundamentalists really like the doctrine of hell. Though there is absolutely no evidence for any such thing, and though, in this atheist’s opinion, the idea of a deity sending its own creations to eternal torture is obviously made up, as it is merely a reflection of the worst of human anger and frailty, Fundies cling to it because it gives them license to lord their strange beliefs over everyone else, and it allows them to cloak their irrational prejudices in the language of concern and love.  Here’s Matt Barber over at Peter’s Playland [no link], engaging in Pete and Matt’s annual Easter tradition of complaining about the San Francisco ‘Hunky Jesus Contest’...

What Barber and those like him fail to understand--or maybe they do understand and just don't want to admit it--is that those who pull off stunts like the Hunky Jesus Contest are actually making fun of Christianists and their professed beliefs, not Jesus per se. If they weren't using their religion as a weapon, there probably wouldn't be a Hunky Jesus Contest just as there is no Hunky Confucius Contest.

MINNESOTA: GOP Legislators Introduce Marriage Ban In State Senate

(JoeMyGod) -- Minnesota GOP state Sen. Warren Limmer:
"The proposed constitutional amendment asks voters to define marriage as solely between one man and one woman in Minnesota. This issue constantly comes up during legislative sessions and it’s time for the people to decide. Allowing a small number of politicians, or activist judges in St. Paul to decide the definition of marriage would not be acceptable. We propose an early passage in the legislature this year, followed by a year discussion in our communities statewide in order to be prepared to vote in next year’s General Election."
Minnesota Democratic state Sen. Scott Dibble, via press release:
"It’s disturbing that Republicans want to use one of the last weeks of the legislative session to marginalize one group of people and divide our state. We are facing a $5 billion budget shortfall, yet Republicans believe the biggest threat to our state’s welfare is who is allowed to be married. Minnesotans who are married legally have access to at least 515 laws that provide security, legal protections, and basic rights such as the ability to care for each other. As lawmakers, we should be focused on breaking these barriers that still exist for thousands of Minnesotans, rather than further isolating one group of people and wasting taxpayers’ time with unfounded fears."

William and Kate: Who Cares?

by Peter Tatchell

(The Advocate) --  COMMENTARY: Two thirds of the British public are largely indifferent or don’t care at all about the royal wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton, according to opinion polls. One third of municipalities have no applications for officially encouraged royal wedding street parties and nearly two thirds have very few. There is no great public enthusiasm for William and Kate’s nuptials. Most people don’t hate the royals, but neither do they love them. Monarchy is losing its luster. It’s fast becoming just another strand of celebrity culture and soap opera.

William and Kate have gay friends but don’t publicly acknowledge them. Members of the royal family who are gay or bisexual hide in the closet and have sham marriages, despite most of the British public accepting LGBTI people and LGBTI equality. What’s the problem with this backward royal family?

NOM Celebrates: We're Causing Same-Sex Marriage Activists To Lose Their Jobs

(JoeMyGod) -- In a post about recent personnel changes at marriage equality groups around the nation, NOM is sarcastically "apologizing" for "driving up the unemployment rate."
It started with Geoff Kors, Executive Director of Equality California in California, who could never recover from his monumental defeat in the Proposition 8 campaign in California, of which NOM was one of the chief supporters and leading organizations to qualify the initiative. Kors stepped down in March of this year. Next up was the Executive Director of Equality Maryland, Morgan Meneses-Sheets, who was fired two weeks ago after failing to pass a gay marriage bill through the Maryland Legislature. It was supposed to be a “given” that gay marriage would pass in Maryland this year. A given, that is, until NOM got involved.

Shortly after Meneses-Sheets was fired, Equality Maryland's Development Director Matthew Thorn resigned in protest over the firing. Most recently, Kathy Kushnir, the Executive Director of Marriage Equality of Rhode Island (MERI) --the leading group advocating for gay marriage in that state-- resigned after failing to even get the gay marriage bill out of Committee in another state that was, we were told, a slam dunk for them this year. All the while, as our opponents keep talking about the march of history, tout biased polls, and tell themselves that their victory is inevitable…secretly, the Executive Directors of other states' “marriage equality” organizations are updating their resumes.
Many of us have recently noticed an increasingly nasty tone from NOM, who (compared to some anti-gay groups) had previously kept their vitriol at a relatively low boil. They are still burning, terribly, over the Marinelli defection.

Church Sign Of The Day

(JoeMyGod) -- The above message is being displayed on an electronic billboard in Toledo, Ohio. The church has issued the below statement in support of their campaign.
This simple statement is intended to be a gift to those who have experienced hurt and discrimination because of their real or perceived sexual orientation. The Church seeks nothing less than the healing of the world, and Central UMC wants to offer words and acts of healing to those hurt and marginalized. Also, declaring that being gay is a gift from God is a prophetic call to the Church to get out of the business of marginalizing gay and lesbian persons from the Church, and to welcome them as full members.

TN House Votes To Overturn Nashville's Gay-Friendly Business Ordinance

(JoeMyGod) -- Earlier this month Nashville's city council approved a law banning the city from doing business with companies that discriminate against their LGBT employees. Yesterday the GOP-dominated state House voted to overturn that law.
The measure sponsored by Republican Caucus Chairman Glen Casada of Franklin was approved 73-24 on Monday. The companion bill is awaiting a vote in the Senate State and Local Government Committee. The proposal would void a Nashville ordinance barring companies that discriminate against gays and lesbians from doing business with the city. Under state law it is illegal to discriminate against a person because of race, creed, color, religion, sex, age or national origin. The Nashville ordinance prohibits companies that discriminate because of sexual orientation or gender identity from receiving city contracts. It does not apply to local governments' hiring policies for their own workers.

So the GOP likes local control except when they don't like it.

OHIO: Eight Horses Burned To Death In Anti-Gay Arson Attack

(JoeMyGod) -- Eight horses were burned alive in their barn this weekend in an arson attack on a property owned by a gay man. The words "Fags are freaks" were found spray-painted on the side of the barn.
Seven adult horses and one foal died as a result of an arson fire at 874 West Richards Road in McConnelsville just after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. Owner Brent Whitehouse said he woke to discover the barn engulfed in flames and immediately called 911, but it was too late. "I couldn't get the door open I could still hear the horses kicking and I tried as hard as I could to get them out and I just couldn't get them out in time," he said. Those who know Brent believe this was a hate crime, explicit words relating to his sexuality were spray painted in large white letters on the side of the barn before the fire was started. "They obviously don't know him very well, because he's a sweet-hearted person and how he lives his lifestyle is nobody's business but his own," said friend Bobbie Nelson.

William Gheen: Wouldbe Immigrants Married To LGBT Americans Want To "Bring Down" American Christian Culture

(JoeMyGod) -- Targeting anybody for importation into the country based on their sexuality doesn't sound like something that Congress should be messing with at all. They're looking to bring in anybody challenging the established culture inside the United States that they want to bring down. And though the majority culture of the United States for the last 200 years has been predominately European Christian, they are looking for anybody that would take issue with that. And, of course, Christianity preaches against sodomy." - William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration, denouncing the Uniting American Families Act.

Tony Perkins On King & Spalding

(JoeMyGod) -- "Looking for attorneys that won't buckle under pressure? Don't bother contacting King & Spalding. In a stunning announcement, the Atlanta-based firm just dropped the most high-profile client on its books: the U.S. House of Representatives. Barely a week ago, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) hired King & Spalding to go to bat for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) when the Obama administration refused. Within hours, the homosexual community was up in arms.

"Led by the so-called Human Rights Campaign, activists promised to target the firm until its attorneys dropped the case. Five days later, they did. Unable -- and unwilling -- to take the heat, King and Spalding took the cowardly way out. Once again we see how the activists who are trying to redefine marriage want to shut down any and all public debate. King & Spalding have proven that they are not advocates for the law -- but for a small but influential cabal that want to undermine policy and society." - Family Research Council head Tony Perkins, via press release.
